Recording history one story at a time

History Heard is building a vast tapestry of modern American, and now modern "world" history, by creating thousands of video interviews with first person witnesses to events. The project is entirely created and managed by high school and middle school students. The purpose is to bridge the ever-widening gap between teachers who are bound exclusively to printed text for historical research and a generation of students who are increasingly comfortable with a video format. The videos are created according to a firm set of standards that preserve their value as primary source material and the safety of the students involved.

Featured Video

During Brazil's turbulent political history, the government has seen democratically elected leaders, the rise and fall of a military dictatorship, and the imprisonment of a former President. This video describes one person's effort to form a small private militia during the collapse of the elected government and beginning of the military dictatorship during the 1980's.

This Season In History

The legacy of the Apollo 11 mission lasted far beyond “one small step for man.” Celebrations went on well into the months that followed the July mission. In August, there were ticker-tape parades in Chicago and New York and the presentation of the Presidential Medal of Freedom at a state dinner in Los Angeles. In September, the astronauts spoke to a joint session of Congress, presenting them with American flags they had brought to the moon. Following shortly after, the astronauts took a tour around the world that stretched well into the fall of 1969.

Dick Morash worked on the final safety checks for the Apollo 11 lunar module.

November 2019

I'm proud, excited, and a little bit nervous to assume the responsibility of Global Student Director for the coming year. I intend to lean heavily on the expertise of my fellow Student Directors throughout the coming year.

My goal is to increase the global expansion of this amazing project by developing student and teacher interest beyond the current countries which generally participate. My personal interests are focused on modern social conflicts, the resulting plight of refugees, and the global women's movement. But the unique nature of History Heard allows all students to share first person stories relating to their interests. Your contribution could be related to sports, entertainment, or a hundred other parts of "history."

So thank you so much for your support and confidence . . . now let's get to work!

Laura Salem

September 2019

This is a challenge every organization wishes it would face: the qualified and commited student candidates for the coming year's leadership team was almost too strong and diverse! As History Heard has grown from a United States based effort to a truly global endeavor, we are excited to see involvement growing from every corner of the planet.

To continue this growth and development, we are excited to announce that the Global Student Director of History Heard for the 2019 - 2020 school year will be Laura Salem.

Laura is currently a senior at Ecolint, a school in Geneva, Switzerland. Laura brings a unique global perspective to History Heard as her family lives in both Europe and South America. She is currently assembling a team of Student Directors who will help her lead History Heard into the future. Good Luck Laura!

At this time we'd also like to extend, once again, our sincere thanks to Rebe Cires who led History Heard last year. This month, Rebe will begin studying law at university in Madrid, Spain! She has promised to continue helping History Heard in the future. For all of your past effort, thank you Rebe! We're confident that you will become one of Europe's outstanding attorneys!

August 2019

This month, the History Heard leadership team is meeting to map out our proposed goals for the coming year and to select a new leadership team. With a growing group of outstanding and committed student talent spread around the globe, selecting a leadership team for the 2019 - 2020 school year will be a difficult challenge. What seems clear is that the coming year will see continued growth for this important project. If you would like to offer suggestions or other input to guide us as we assemble the new leadership team, please email us!

First person accounts of past generations are lost everyday. History Heard has created a way to preserve those stories. Video interviews provide a firsthand look at history from the people who were there. The videos can be used as interesting primary sources for students.

For centuries, knowledge and wisdom have been passed down from older generations to younger ones. Somehow in our fast-paced world, we've lost this tradition. It's time not only to bring it back but to improve it. The stories that people share can now be heard and seen all over the world at the click of a button.

Everyone has a relative or friend or knows of a local nursing home where they can sit down and talk to someone with an amazing experience that is waiting to be shared with the world. Everyone has a story.
